Sean Dwyer won the Unlimited Grand Prix “Shootout” race on his Suzuki GSX-R1000, after battling with Stefano Mesa for the lead during the CCS Florida season-opener February 15 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, in Homestead, Florida.

Dwyer was out front early in the race, holding off Mesa’s West Side Performance-built Suzuki GSX-R1000 until lap two, when Mesa made his passing move through Turn 10 and claimed the front spot.

Mesa continued to lead, lap after lap, with Dwyer tight on his tail until the white flag came out. With the pressure full on, Mesa crashed out of the race in Turn Eight, putting Dwyer out front for the finish. Dwyer took the checkered flag with Armando Ferrer, Bruno Silva, Wayne Rayne Veras, and Barrett Long rounding off the top five.

When asked after the race about

Mesa’s passing move through Turn 10, Dwyer stated, “Man, that kid’s just wicked fast there. I think he closes his eyes. He gets into [Turn] 10 real well. So that’s like his section and he knows it. And he knows it’s my weak spot, so he tends to get me there. And he knows I’m pretty good on the brakes in Turn Six so he really guards that good. I was laughing in my helmet because it was such a smart veteran move and the kid’s really maturing. So, it was fun.”

Of

Mesa’s crash, Dwyer commented, “You hate to win ‘em like that. I hate to see him fall down. I went and checked on him… He’s OK. I just wanted to keep the pressure on him. It was tough with the conditions. The sunlight there going into Turn One. Turn Eight, we couldn’t see the brake markers at all. So we were kind of just guessing. He got in there a little soft and he knew he had to get out real well, and he just got on the gas and lost it.”

On the podium, Dwyer thanked his wife Daniela, Nick Vetrano, Dunlop Tires, Bell Helmets, all his buddies for helping out. “The Dunlop tires were amazing,” exclaimed Dwyer. “Tony, Randy, everybody at Dunlop, thanks a lot. The tires were ridiculous. The bike was set up kind of like a turd basket this morning. It was getting better and getting better and then Thermosman helped us out with a change there for the shootout and it really made a difference.”

Earlier in the day, Ferrer won the GTU race. He also finished second in the Unlimited Superbike class, and third in the GTO and Middleweight Superbike classes. Ferrer thanked Dunlop, RacersPrice.com, and Moto Fairing for all their support.

Silva struggled through the weekend with some mechanical issues. “I had a little problem with the bike,” he stated. “But, I will never quit. So, the bike had a problem and I solved the problem. So, I had to go and I got it. I want to enjoy the opportunity to thank first of all God, my family for all their support, ART Performance to make my bike run fast. Pirelli tires, they did an amazing job. Just the first race of the year, I want to improve and improve and improve. It’s pretty hard to ride with those guys. Thanks everybody. Thank you. Thanks to Eric Gray because he will never forgive me if I don’t say it.” Silva finished third in the Unlimited Supersport race and fourth in Middleweight Superbike.

Mesa was the winningest Expert of the weekend with a total of six victories . He won the Expert GTO, Unlimited Supersport, and Unlimited Superbike races on his Westside Performance built Suzuki GSX-R1000. He won the Middleweight Supersport, Middleweight Superbike, and Middleweight Grand Prix classes on his Yamaha YZF-R6.

Mesa is also supported by Addict by Bosi, Dunlop, Thermosman, Core Moto, and Pit-Eck. He also finished fourth in GTU after crashing in turn four.

Mark Rhoades was the winningest Amateur of the weekend with five first-place finishes. He won the Amateur Unlimited Supersport, Middleweight Supersport, Middleweight Superbike, Unlimited Superbike, Middleweight Superbike and Middleweight Grand Prix races on his Farrell Performance Kawasaki ZX-6R. He also finished second in the Heavyweight Supersport race, and third in GTO. He is sponsored by Precision Wheel Repair and DC Vinyl.
