Dominguez Sets New track Record at Hallett with CMRA

Dustin Dominguez put on an epic show as he rode his Dunlop-Shod Suzuki GSX-R1000 to smash the track record not once, but twice during the Formula 1 Expert race during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) eighth round of Bridgestone/CMRA Championship sprints this past Sunday, September 24, on the 11-turn, 1.8 mile counter clockwise course at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, Hallett, Oklahoma.

Partially cloudy skies gave way to sunshine, temperatures in the mid-90s with a strong steady breeze that made for fast lap times and great track conditions.

Dominguez got down to business, taking the win in P1 Racing/Metric Garage /CVC – Formula 1 Expert, with a fastest lap of 1:14.317, the fastest lap of the entire weekend, on Lap 3 of Race 10 – Formula 1 Expert. This broke the old record of 1:14.371 set by Derek Wagnon on May 18, 2014.

Cooper McDonald was out front for the Lightweights, taking the wins in Century Trucks and Vans – Formula 2 Expert, Rookie Expert Lightweight, and Heavyweight Twins Expert, with his Yamaha FZ-07R, running a fastest lap of 1:20.165 on Lap 8 of Race 9, Formula 2 Expert.

The standout for the Middleweights was Conner Blevins, taking his EMR Machining-backed Kawasaki ZX-6R/636 to the wins in South Central Race Center- C Superstock Expert, B Superbike Expert, C Superbike Expert and second in P1 Racing/Metric Garage /CVC – Formula 1 Expert and turning a fastest lap of 1:15.520 on lap 2 of Race 10, the Formula 1 Expert race.

Morning qualifying for Sunday’s headline Formula 1 Expert race saw lap times in the high teens with the potential for some fierce battles. Dustin Dominguez took pole position with his Suzuki GSX-R1000, with Dustin Meador, also on a Suzuki GSX-R1000 next, and Yamaha YZF-R1 mounted Doug Frenchak rounding out the front row.

As the 13 bike grid lined up, the tension began to mount. The start lights went out, the grid shot forward and Dominguez was out in front early with Blevins hot on his tail as Frenchak and Meador battled for position. Lap 2 was the breakout lap, with the race leaders all breaking below 1:16 lap times, and Dominguez throwing down a blazing 1:14.398, breaking the previous track record. Blevins answered with a 1:15.520, as Frenchak turned a 1:15.649 and Meador a 1:15.965. Dominguez put his head down, and pulled out a 1:14.317 on lap 3, breaking the track record again, followed by a 1:14.368 on lap 4 to firmly cement his lead. Blevins edged away from Frenchak and Meador who were battling for third, with Yamaha YZF-R1 mounted Brian Cox wrestling with Jordan Pence on a Yamaha YZF-R6 right behind. Kawasaki ZX-10R mounted Ron Mears was holding off Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Kyle Coles and Jack Vigneau aboard a Yamaha YZF-R1, as Ben Jones charged into the 10th spot on his Kawasaki ZX-10R.

The pace was furious, as Dominguez stretched his lead, and Blevins got a little distance from Frenchak and Meador. With just under two laps to go, a crash brought the red flag out and brought the nail biter of a race to an end. Dominguez won, with a 6.134 margin over Blevins in second. Frenchak came in third, just over two seconds behind Blevins, with Meador fourth, Cox in fifth, and Pence finishing sixth. Mears was next in seventh, Coles, Vigneau, and Jones rounded out the top ten.

Blevins also grabbed the P1 Racing purse for being the first 600 across the line.

Top Novice went to Dustin Tessier again, riding his Yamaha YZF-R6 to four podiums total. Tessier took the wins in B Superbike Novice, C Superbike Novice, second in Moto Liberty – C Superstock Novice, and third in MotorSport Ranch – B Superstock Novice, turning a fastest lap of 1:19.223 on Lap 6 of Race 12, the C Superbike race.

Team Westby was also on hand at the lunch time podium, handing out T-shirts and taking a memorial group photo with the podium motorcycles.
