The Derek Wagnon/Brandon Young team, brought home the win in the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) third Team 60 race this past Saturday, July 6. CMRA began its sixth round of the season running a 4-Hour Mini Endurance, Mini Sprints, Team 60 race, and the Solo 30 races simultaneously on both the 1.7-mile long course and 1.3-mile short course of the MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, Texas. Hot sticky weather with temperatures in the high 90’s to low 100’s with a light breeze made for great track conditions and healthy grids.

The first race of the day on the 1.7-mile course was the Team 60 race, with 20 teams on the grid. The LeMans-style start used at the first round, was employed again, and went off clean.

The exciting action started with Derek Wagnon and Brandon Young combo riding for the Howard/Young team turning the fastest lap of the race of 1:17.092 on Lap 2, leading in the overall and in Heavyweight. Wagnon was substitute riding for Ty Howard aboard Howard’s KTM RC8 and pulled the team out to an early lead. The Andy Galindo/Eric Williams team was right on their heels with a fastest lap of 1:18.939, running second overall and first in Middleweight. The Pete Martins/John Orchard pairing pulled a 1:19.783, running third overall and second in Heavyweight. The race leaders kept it fast, and the entire race put on a great show, with the fastest laps all being within 9 seconds of the race leaders. The field stayed close, and there were battles all the way to the back. When the checkers dropped at 10 am, Wagnon/Young took the overall and Heavyweight win, with Galindo/Williams in second overall and first in Middleweight. Martins/Orchard took third overall and second in Heavyweight.

Wagnon shared this about riding for Howard, “This was a last minute thing that Ty Howard and Brandon Spradling put together and gave me a bike to ride this weekend. It was my first time racing with Brandon Young on my team, but he’s great to ride with, and my first time on a KTM. So I was getting used to the bike and everything, but it went really well. We are still working on a few setup things for the bike to get ready for Sunday which is the main thing, but it feels really good. I do want to thank Ty for giving me a bike to ride this weekend, and Brandon for the support.”

Meanwhile, on the 1.3-mile course, the Mini Sprint grids kicked off Saturday’s racing action with Formula 4 and Texas Tornado Boot Camp Superstock E once again having over 20 entries each.

The 4-Hour Mini Endurance had a combined grid of 25 teams, with Formula 4 Endurance represented. The green flag dropped and the BRAWP BRAWP racing team, consisting of John Rangel, Trey Morris, John Redford, David Hicks and Kris Lillegard, riding a Kawasaki 250R, took the lead with a fastest lap of 1:11.782, with the RyderHard Racing team of Ken Ryder, Jay Newton and Shawn Diamond, also on a Kawasaki 250R, in pursuit, turning a fastest lap of 1:11.828. Desert Brats Racing lept into third, with the Green Machine team right behind. During the second hour, the Desert Brats team of Rick Hogge and Brad Thomas took over the lead, riding a Kawasaki 250R and held it, with RyderHard Racing and the Green Machine team of Brandon Altmeyer, Jesse Davis, David Tiede, and Ryan Andrews, also on a Kawasaki 250R, battling for second. The Tip Toes & Tonka Trucks team of Rebecca Caudle, Jeremy Harvey, Jason Swan, Steve Haesemeyer and Ron Mears ran the fastest lap of the entire race with a 1:09.953 with their Kawasaki 250R during hour 3 getting around Green Machine to join the battle for second. However, Tip Toes & Tonka Trucks had a forced pit stop for a mechanical when their muffler bracket came loose, and Green Machine got back around them for third. Desert Brats Racing held onto to their lead, taking the checkers for the overall endurance and Formula 4 win with 192 laps. RyderHard Racing finished second overall and in Formula 4 with 191 laps, and Green Machine took third overall and in Formula 4, completing 191 laps.

Back on the 1.7-mile course, the Solo 30 Expert and Novice races finished up the day’s action and drew decent grids as well, with racers lining up to sprint for 30 minutes in one stint on one bike. Danny Kelsey won Solo 30 Heavyweight Expert with his Suzuki GSX-R1000, running within .5 seconds of the lap record the entire race. Kevin Taylor took the win in Heavyweight Novice on his Honda CBR1000RR. Conner Blevins rode his Kawasaki ZX-6R to the win in Solo 30 Middleweight Expert, while Chris Hamlett took the win in Middleweight Novice on his Suzuki GSX-R600. Solo 30 Lightweight Expert had Daniel Adams for the win on his Suzuki SV650, and John Byus also won Lightweight Novice with a Suzuki SV650. Bill Syfan aced the Solo 30 Ultra Lightweight race on his Kawasaki 250R.
