American Kenny Noyes, riding his Folch Yamaha R1, came from eleventh on the grid to a seventh place finish in round 4 of the Spanish 1000cc Formula Extreme championship on Sunday at Jerez de la Frontera in southern Spain. Traction problems in qualifying were partially solved by some chassis adjustments in the morning warm-up and Noyes was in the thick of the group battling for fourth over the first half of the race, but the problems returned and Noyes dropped back to finish seventh. “In qualifying I was spinning and couldn’t get any drive, but we went to a softer spring on the rear shock and that was a big improvement in the warm-up. In the race I was running a half second under my qualifying time and feeling that I could fight for fourth. But then the rear tire started spinning off the corners again. I tried to go with David Tomás and Josep Sarda but the bike was trying to high-side me,” said Noyes. “We need to look at the data acquisition read-outs and talk to Michelin and Ohlins to see what we need to do.” Team owner Josep Folch believes that Noyes is very close to breaking through to the lead group. “This was Kenny’s first ride on a Yamaha at Jerez after running the last couple of seasons with Honda. We made big progress from Friday when he was stuck in the 48s. On Sunday he ran several 46’s. We have a second chance at Jerez in November.” With most national championships around the world either finished or about to finish, the Spanish CEV still has three races left to run. Former 500 Grand Prix rider José David de Gea won on his BQR Honda CBR1000RR from Josep Monge (Promoracing Yamaha R1) and Carmelo Morales (ZK Pontgrup Suzuki GSX-R 1000. Championship leader Ivan Silva (Laglisse Yamaha R1) was forced to retire with machine problems when running eighth and fourth place finisher Javier del Amor is now second in the points race, 14 back of de Gea.
