Adams, Tomlinson, Zelm take multiple podiums with CMRA at NOLA

Daniel Adams, Garet Tomlinson, and Shane Zelm all took multiple podiums in tough competition during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) fifth round of Bridgestone/CMRA Championship sprints this past Sunday, June 18. Rain overnight made for green and slick conditions in the morning, giving way to intermediate conditions in the afternoon as temperatures heated up to the high 90’s, with track conditions creating a shake up in the podium line ups all day. The lap times went from shaky to fast on the 2.75 mile, 16-turn course at NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale, Louisiana, as the sun dried the track.

The Lightweight grids were robust once again, despite the threat of rain, with the Formula 2, Lightweight Twins, D Superstock, and D Superbike all having sizable grids. Adams once again rose above some stiff competition, taking four podiums on his Pirelli–shod Suzuki SV650, winning Century Trucks and Vans – Formula 2 Expert, Century Trucks and Vans – D Superbike Expert, D Superstock Expert, Lightweight Twins Expert, third in D Superstock Expert and turning a blazing fastest lap of 1:53.682.

Garet Tomlinson was the standout in the Middleweights, riding his G-Man Racing prepped, Dunlop shod Yamaha YZF-R6 to two wins in M4/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, second in B Superstock Expert, and C Superstock Expert. Tomlinson had one more win on the line when he crashed out of the lead during race 22 – C Superbike Expert, with one lap left while turning a crazy fast 1:46.788.

For the Heavyweights, Shane Zelm had his first visit to the top of the box this season, with two wins and two second place finishes aboard his Sweeney’s SV prepped, Pirelli-shod Suzuki GSX-R750. He grabbed the top spots in B Superstock Expert and B Superbike Expert, with additional podiums in RaceworX – A Superstock Expert and 212 Decals.com – A Superbike Expert, and a fastest lap of 1:49.522.

Morning qualifying for the M4 Exhaust/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert race was cancelled due to poor track conditions, so as the 14 bike grid lined up, they were placed according to points. The start lights had a malfunction, so the start was aborted, and everyone was brought back around to re-grid. Because of fuel consumption, the race was shortened to seven laps, and this time when the lights went out, the entire grid stampeded into Turn One. Brandon Cleland snagged the early lead aboard his RES prepped, Pirelli-shod Yamaha YZF-R6, but had James Camacho and Garet Tomlinson all over him on their Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R6’s. Joseph Caruso, riding a BMW S1000RR was going at it hammer and tongs with Suzuki GSX-R1000 mounted Jeff Wrobel, while Ron Mears, piloting a Honda CBR600, pushed for an opening. Nick Doolan, also on a Yamaha YZF-R6, battled with Yamaha YZF-R1 mounted Steven Nedd and Carl Price, while Britten Geary completed the Yamaha show on his R6, rounding out the top 10.

Camacho squeezed by Cleland to briefly take the lead with a smoking 1:47.069, but Tomlinson wasn’t having it and rocketed to first, turning the fastest lap of the race with a 1:46.786 on Lap 4. Cleland answered with a 1:47.725, but couldn’t overtake him. As the leaders continued on like a pack of fighting squirrels, Caruso put Wrobel in the rearview mirror for fourth and held on. Wrobel now had his hands full with Mears, while Nedd and Price duked it out with Doolan. Tomlinson shook off Camacho and Cleland, stretching his lead to 1.186 seconds and taking the checkers for the win. Camacho finished next, just ahead of Cleland, with Caruso crossing fourth, Wrobel fifth, Mears sixth, and Doolan, Nedd, Price, and Geary finishing out the top 10. Tomlinson also won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line during the Formula 1 race.

11- year old Brylin Schrock was Top Novice this weekend for his efforts, riding three different bikes to six podiums out of seven races between Saturday and Sunday competition. Schrock took the wins in Formula 5 on his Honda RS65, 500 Superstock on his Yamaha YZF-R3, and Formula 3 on his Honda RS125. He also took second in Ultra Lighweight GP Novice, Lightweight Twins Novice, and The Bike Doctors – Formula 2 Novice, turning a 2:01.205 for a fastest lap with his Honda RS125.

Brandie Cox won the “Jennifer Millsap Get it Girl” $100 award sponsored by A.G. Horn, on her Suzuki GSXR-750 for her combined finishes in four races; Modern Classic/SuperDinosaur Endurance, B Superbike Expert, RaceworX – A Superstock Expert, and 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert.

Shandra Crawford was the second winner of the new “Racer’s Race” award for overcoming a myriad of setbacks, still competing, and grabbing two podiums out of her four races, with a second in Heavyweight Twins, and second in North Texas Superbikes – Formula 1 Ladies.
