CURTAIN CLAIMS FORMULA XTREME POLE AT WINTON

Three times Formula Xtreme Champion Kevin Curtain has secured pole position for tomorrow’s second round of the 2002 Yamaha Xtreme Tri-State Formula
Xtreme races to be held at Victoria’s Winton Raceway.

Riding his Radar’s Team Yamaha YZF R1, Curtain set the fastest time of the combined qualifying sessions with a 1:39.042 lap of the 3.00km Victorian circuit.

Qualifying for the weekend’s races was disrupted by rain showers, restricting teams to using wet weather tyres, rather than their preferred
slicks.

“I was happy with the changes that we made to the bike in between sessions and they certainly helped us with the times we set this afternoon,” said Curtain. “Even though it’s wet, the track doesn’t feel that slippery, which is good. There are a couple of sections that are slippery when it’s dry, but not that bad when they are wet. Aside from that, things are looking good for
tomorrow’s races.”

Second fastest was Ballarat’s Liam Magee, who chased Curtain home after being the early pace setter in the final qualifying session. Magee’s best time aboard his Vicstate Distributors Suzuki GSX-R1000 was a 1:39.402

Third fastest was defending Formula Xtreme champion Robbie Baird (1:39.663) who edged out Radar’s Team Yamaha teammate Craig Coxhell (1:40.491) who completed the front row of the grid.

Coxhell, 19, is one of the local favourites this weekend who is hoping to do well in front of his home fans.

Row two is headed by New Zealander Tony Rees (Bikebiz Yamaha YZF R1) who improved on his first session time to record a 1:40.814. Sixth fastest was privateer Clayton Landells (Yamaha YZF R1, 1:41.249) followed by Wagga’s Craig McMartin (Ducati 996R, 1:41.252) and Robert Bugden (Gold Coast Suzuki GSX-R1000, 1:42.625).

Team Honda’s Josh Brookes was back in eleventh after crashing in the final seconds of the first qualifying session. His new Honda CBR954RR suffered considerable damage and the team reverted to his second machine for the afternoon session.

Making his return to the series this weekend was Wayne Maxwell. The former Team Kawasaki rider is competing aboard a Suzuki GSX-R1000 this weekend as he finalises his race plans for the remainder of the season. The Wollongong rider qualified one spot behind Brookes and ahead of the Bio Magnetics Sport Yamaha pair of Daniel and Jamie Stauffer.

Tomorrow’s race program will feature the four eight lap Formula Xtreme races, with warm up commencing at 9:00 a.m.,before racing gets underway at approx 10:30 a.m..
