COLORADAN’S PETE TABOR, ROB CHRISTMAN, AND WYETH JACKSON WIN AT CVMA ROUND TWO

Lap Records Lowered In Ultra Lightweight Classes

Round 2 of CVMA’s Winter Series went down the weekend of October 18-19, and saw the Southern-California club swarmed by Coloradan racers looking to extend their racing season. In all, 12 MRA members attended Round 2, including fast-guys Pete Tabor and Rob Christman and quick-chick Wyeth Jackson.

Out-of-towner Pete Tabor won Sunday’s 12-lap Open Shootout race after a chaotic first lap that saw odds-on favorite Rob Christman on the ground in turn 3. Later in lap one local racers Chad Lewin and Kenny Perez both became spectators after an incident in turn 16, handing Tabor the lead. Brian Short, riding a Yamaha YZF-R6, kept Tabor honest for the remainder of race. Short nipped at Tabor’s heels repeatedly but was helpless against the horsepower of Tabor’s ZX-10R. Tabor took the win, with Short in second and Ray Thornton in third.

Although Christman’s Open Shootout race was a disappointment, the Coloradan dominated Saturday and Sunday’s Formula Open events, leading every lap of both races aboard his Suzuki GSX-R1000. Saturday’s podium was rounded out by Pete Tabor in second and Brian Short—on a GSX-R1000—in third. Short took second on Sunday, followed by Daytona Anderson in third.

MRA rider Wyeth Jackson won the all-female FemmeWalla races both days on her Kawasaki ZX-6R. She’s in the points lead for the class.

As is his custom, Christian Readyhoff took first in both Formula Twins races, followed by Brad Perdiew and Kalvin Kwong on Saturday and Kwong and Walto Nitto Sr. on Sunday.

SRA sidecars once again piggybacked on the CVMA event. Big Dog Garage’s Bernard Juchli and Kevin “Chango” Kautzky took the win both days on their CBR1000RR-powered rig, followed by Wood Bros Racing’s John Wood and Betty Herlocker, who narrowly edged out Team Nurburgring for the final podium step.

In the small-bike classes, Shane Liberty and Ari Henning set new lap records for Ultra Lightweight Shootout and 250 Supersport, respectively. Henning and Liberty battled fiercely all weekend, and each rider took a win and a second in each class. Josh Fogle took third in all four races. Saturday was the fastest day and saw Liberty lower the Ultra Lightweight Shootout record on his AP MotoArts Ninja 300 with a lap time of 2:00.396. In 250 SuperSport, Henning slashed several tenths off the record with a 2:00.110 lap aboard his Honda CBR250R.

Sunday’s 10-lap Middleweight Shootout was a nail-biter, with young-guns Andrew Zabzdyr, Michael Gilbert, and Chad Lewin all vying for the lead. Each rider led the race at some point, but it was Chad Lewin, riding a Cycle Mall-prepared Yamaha YZF-R6, that took the checkers. Zabzdyr was a close second on his AP MotoArts YZF-R6, and Gilbert came in third on his Cycle Mall YZF-R6. Lewin and Zabzdyr split wins in the Supersport Middleweight races.

Racing resumes at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway the weekend of November 15th and 16th. CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying and a wide variety of classes to choose from. Additionally, CVMA offers free reciprocity as a means of encouraging racers from other clubs to come out and compete.
