Yamaha Takes Back Lead in Barcelona Marathon After 18 Hours

Drama struck, as it usually does, just before dawn. First the leading Folch 2 Yamaha crashed at the end of the home straight and the rider had to make the long push back to the pits. The Catalá 1, Suzuki (Fores-Cabana-Monge) had already just made two unscheduled stops with a slipping clutch and a burned out headlight. This had dropped them to fourth and sent the Catala 2, Suzuki (Diego Lozano-Kenny Noyes-Jose Ramon Delgado) into second, and with the Folch crash, Kenny Noyes, riding the dawn stint, looked sure to take the lead.

Then the safety cars came on for a fallen rider at the final corner and Noyes made an emergency stop to change a terminally slipping clutch.

Folch got his repaired Yamaha back into the fray just before the pace car appeared and kept the lead, with the Pons Yamaha (Casas-Tizon-Perez) moving into second. With both Catala bikes now running again the results are as follows, but with a fireball sun rising in a cloudless sky, tire technicians anticipate much higher track temperatures than yesterday, and that could be a factor.

With six hours to go, the race now moves into its final stage.

1. Folch 2, Yamaha (Tomas-Hervas-Ribalta) 518 LAPS

2. Pons Yamaha (Casas-Tizon-Perez) – 3 LAPS

3. Catalá 1, Suzuki (Fores-Cabana-Monge) – 6 LAPS

4. Catala 2, Suzuki (Diego Lozano-Kenny Noyes-Jose Ramon Delgado) – 6 LAPS

5. Procurve Honda (Stey-Lagrille-Roda) – 13 LAPS

6. Folch 1 Yamaha (Sanchez-Arque-Martinez) – 21 LAPS

7. Procurve Honda (Stey-Lagrille-Roda) –26 LAPS

8. Procurve Honda (Rojas-Carrau-Guiteres) -27 LAPS

9. Prolimit Suzuki (Gomez-Olmos-Delgado) -30 LAPS

10. Chalon Yamaha, (Boquet-Baker-Giles) – 37 LAPS

(49 TEAMS ARE STILL RUNNING OF 57 STARTERS)
