Cleland, Ortt Win Big at Motorsport Ranch with CMRA

CMRA Number One plate holder Brandon Cleland was back with three podiums during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) fifth round of sprint races this past Sunday, June 21. A second day of scorching heat with temperatures in the low 100’s greeted competitors from as far away as Florida, Missouri, and Mexico City as the lap times stayed fast on the 1.7- mile, 11-turn clockwise course at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, Texas.

This was Cleland’s first weekend back to competition after a crash at Hallett in May, and he was in top form, immediately taking command of the grids. Cleland took a thrilling win in the premier Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert aboard his Pirelli shod Yamaha YZF-R6, and took two more in B Superbike Expert and C Superbike Expert. Cleland also won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line during the Formula 1 race.

Braeden Ortt, the 15-year-old Canadian racer, was once again stiff competition, taking two wins and six additional podiums, eight total, on his Pirelli-shod Yamaha YZF-R6. Ortt won 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert, Rookie Expert Heavyweight, took second in Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, RaceworX – A Superstock Expert, and third in B Superstock Expert, B Superbike Expert, South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert, and C Superbike Expert.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert race promised to be a thriller, with morning qualifying having competitors only tenths of a second apart. Cleland turned the fastest lap of the weekend with a 1:15.112 to grab the pole.

The start lights went out and Cleland put his head down to grab the lead. Braeden Ortt and his Yamaha YZF-R6 was right on his heels with Brandon Young on his Suzuki GSX-R1000 in pursuit. Cleland crushed Lap 2 with the fastest lap of the race, turning a 1:15.455. Ortt answered with a 1:16.080 while Young hung in with a 1:16.663. Craig Montgomery, riding a Suzuki GSX-R1000 tangled with Joseph Caruso on a BMW S1000RR turning a 1:17.487 to Caruso’s 1:17.809, for fourth. As the final laps wound down, Cleland inched away from Ortt, holding the lead the entire race. Coming on to the front straight for the final time, Cleland had stretched his lead to 5.592 seconds over second place, taking the checkers and the win. Ortt snagged second, while Young crossed the line third, Montgomery held fourth, and Caruso in fifth. Bobby Davies, Jeff Wrobel, Jordan Pence, Will Shupak, and Sean Gurevich rounded out the top 10.

Robert Duncan took the Top Novice spot with his Yamaha YZF-R1, taking the wins in SpeedFreakDecals.com – Formula 1 Novice, North Texas Superbikes – A Superbike Novice, and Crazy Jack’s Powersports – Formula 40 Heavyweight Novice.

Daisy DeSimone won the “Jennifer Millsap Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A.G. Horn, for her combined finishes in four races on her Suzuki GSX-R750.
