CARR EARNS EIGHTH AMA PRO RACING ATHLETE OF THE YEAR NOMINATION PICKERINGTON, Ohio (Nov. 9, 2005) Chris Carr earned his eighth AMA Pro Racing SPEED Channel Athlete of the Year nomination for yet another championship-winning season in the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship. He won the prestigious award in 2003. Carr won his seventh AMA Grand National Championship this year. The title was the fifth in a row for the 38-year-old Californian who now calls Fleetwood, Pa., home. “This year’s championship was an important milestone,” said Carr, who is rider/owner of the Quality Checked Certified Pre-Owned Ford team. “I’ve now tied Scotty (Parker) with five in a row and have a chance next year to be the first to win six straight. It’s going to be a tough record to break, but I’m looking forward to giving it my best shot.” Carr won the 2005 AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship in a very competitive season that saw eight different winners in 15 rounds. He was challenged by Ken Coolbeth, Jr., and Joe Kopp much of the year. Carr finished out the season by winning the final two rounds (both mile tracks) at Springfield and Du Quoin and also won the Syracuse Mile earlier in June. Carr added four wins to his tally this season and now has 72-career AMA Grand National wins making him the winningest active rider in the championship and second on the all-time wins list. Not only is Carr the top-ranked rider in the AMA Grand National all-time wins list, he also holds the top spot for mile, half-mile, TT and short track wins among active riders. “I don’t have a great batting record,” Carr joked when talking about winning Athlete of the Year only once in his previous seven nominations. “I’m still honored to be nominated among this outstanding group of riders. I always look forward to going to Las Vegas and getting together with all the other riders and people from our industry.” The AMA Pro Racing SPEED Channel Athlete of the Year Award is the highest honor an AMA racer can receive. Past recipients include such legendary names as Bob Hannah, Scott Parker and Kenny Roberts, among others. Generally speaking, the award goes to the rider judged to have had the most successful racing year. A “lifetime achievement” approach can also be considered if the season complements a remarkable career. A selection panel made up of AMA and AMA Pro Racing staff, field staff and volunteer leadership is named by the AMA Pro Racing CEO and that panel evaluates nominations and determines the final winner. The 2005 AMA Pro Racing SPEED Channel Athlete of the Year will be named at the AMA Pro Racing Championship Awards Banquet, on Sunday, Nov. 20, at Paris Las Vegas.
