Camacho, Ortt Finish Strong at CMRA Season Finale

James Camacho Jr. and Braeden Ortt both took home three wins each during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) season finale event this past Sunday, November 1, at a drenched MSR Houston in Angleton, Texas.

A second day of pouring rain and temperatures in the mid 60’s, with standing water in parts of the track and paddock made for treacherous racing conditions on the 2.38 mile, 17-turn course, welcoming racers from as far away as Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Florida.

Camacho rode his Dunlop shod Yamaha YZF-R6 to win the Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, B Superstock Expert, and South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert. Camacho also won $150 for being the first 600 across the line in Formula 1 Expert.

Ortt rode his Pirelli shod Yamaha YZF-R6 to the wins in RaceworX – A Superstock Expert, 212Decals.com- A Superbike Expert, Rookie Expert Heavyweight, and grabbed four additional podiums, finishing second in Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, B Superstock Expert, South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert, and C Superbike Expert

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert race was a test of the best rain riders, with morning qualifying canceled due to the conditions. The race was gridded by points, and as the grid surged forward on the race start towards the first turn, one could hear traction controls kick in, and watch rain tires flex and slide as the 12 bike grid got underway. James Camacho Jr and Braeden Ortt battled for the lead on their Yamaha YZF-R6’s, while newlywed Alonzo Contreras aboard his Suzuki GSX-R600 had his hands full with Britten Geary, aboard his Yamaha YZF-R6. Bobby Davies was holding down fifth on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Camacho put down the fastest lap of the race on Lap 7, turning a 1:48.571. Ortt did a fastest lap of 1:48.918, not quick enough to get away from Camacho. A little further back, Contreras turned a fastest lap of 1:51.794 to Geary’s 1:51.541, as the pair raced side by side for the entire race. In a nail biter finish, Camacho edged Ortt at the line by 0.080 of a second to take the win, and in the other nail biter, Contreras held on for third, edging Geary at the line by 0.104 of a second. Davies held fifth, with Brandon Young finishing sixth, Joseph Caruso in seventh, Jordan Pence in eighth, Craig Montgomery in ninth, and Sean Gurevich in 10th.

Also riding strong in the middleweights was Garet Tomlinson on his Dunlop shod Yamaha YZF-R6. Tomlinson was leading the championship points in two classes and behind by a mere five points in a third, when he had a low side in the first practice session followed by nasty high side in the second morning practice. His shoulder was hurting, but he got his bike fixed, and went on to finish his three races strong with a 10th, eighth, and fifth place finish, clinching the South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert and C Superbike Expert championships, and taking second overall in B Superstock Expert. A medical visit after the race revealed a broken shoulder, torn muscles, and the rotator cuff detached. Tomlinson will be undergoing surgery on Thursday.

Brian Prescott got the Top Novice spot, with four podiums total, taking the wins in Moto Liberty – C Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice, and second in JT’s Performance Plus – C Superbike Novice and Lone Star Track Days – B Superstock Novice on his Yamaha YZF-R6.

Shandra Crawford won the “Jennifer Millsap Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A.G. Horn, for her combined finishes in four races on her Triumph Daytona 675R.
