CRA Race Results From Brainerd International Raceway

On Sunday, July 12, a severe weather system ripped through the Brainerd, Minnesota area, doing significant damage to the Brainerd International Raceway facilities. Many trees were downed, numerous structures had roofs torn off, several campers were destroyed, and a section of grand stands was twisted over the crash barrier by the track’s front straightaway. Track management was adamant that the track would be ready for the Central Roadracing Association’s July event, and over the following week, numerous volunteers assisted in repairing and readying the facilities. As a result of the hard work by so many, the club was able to hold their July event in its entirety. The CRA wholeheartedly thanks Brainerd International Raceway, and all those who helped make the July race weekend possible.

The Central Roadracing Association held their third event of the 2015 season on July 17-19. This was the club’s first time running on Brainerd International Raceway’s 3.1 mile Donnybrooke course in 2015, which is necessary for their traditional Framstad cup format. Named after founding club member Don Framstad, the Framstad Cup is a “hare-and-tortoise” race that uses lap times from Saturday’s Trophy dashes to stager the starts of a field of 20 bikes from all categories. The intent is that all riders finish the 5 lap sprint at the same time. Typically, infield traffic slows down the faster, larger displacement bikes, giving the win to Lightweight or Ultralight bikes. However, 600cc riders Scott Stall and Justin Ebnet were on a tear, getting past almost the entire field with a full lap to go. While Stall was putting in the fastest lap times of the race, Ebnet’s Honda CBR600RR crossed the line first with a 1.289 second lead over Stall, followed by Christian Schmidt’s destroked Yamaha YZF-R6 Lightweight racer closing out the podium. Ebnet attributed winning the prestigious trophy to catching slower traffic in ideal locations throughout the race.

Saturday’s 18 lap trophy dashes included several race long battles. The GP1 class saw veteran Bob Barton handily lead the class on his Kramer HKR-EVO2 for the opening laps until deciding to frolic in the lawn, giving the class win to Trevor Treviranus’ Yamaha YZ450F. Barton didn’t repeat his mistake, sweeping the Ultralight sprints. Novices Aaron Foss and Paul Satterlee leapfrogged each other for all 18 laps in the GP2 category, but reigning champion Christian Schmidt took the class win, followed by Brett Donahue’s modified Ducati 748 and Jon Champ’s freshly rebuilt SV650 supersport bike. Scott Stall won the GP3 and overall trophy dash, and Zach Hughes won the GP4 category after battling with Tony Mahto and Aaron Anderson for the full race. The three GP4 bikes crossed the line within 1.2 seconds of each other.

Current points leader Scott Stall was on point all weekend, winning almost every race he entered. Stall won the Supersport Middleweight sprint on only three cylinders, but couldn’t overcome a jettisoned chain in the Superbike Unlimited sprint. Even more impressive, Stall set the lap record for the current Donnybrooke configuration during the Supersport Unlimited sprint, riding his Pirelli D.O.T. Diablo Supercorsa SC1 – V2 shod Kawasaki ZX-10R to a lap time of 1:40.862.

The Michelin Middleweight and Heavyweight categories saw Framstad winner Justin Ebnet podium in the Superbike and Grand Prix sprints, and Aaron Anderson got on every Heavyweight podium, winning the Supersport sprint. In the novice categories, Tom Austin quickly learned the track during his first Donnybrooke weekend, and battled front runners Luke Schmidt, Justin Craine, and Lucas Wygant for class wins.

The Worldwide Machining and Welding Unlimited sprints saw mechanical failures take out Bell Helmets riders Scott Stall and Shane Keaveny during the weekend, but the two split class wins, followed closely by John Staska’s Suzuki GSX-R 1000. Marlin Johnson and Matt Cina won the Worldwide Machining and Welding Unlimited novice sprints.

Christian Schmidt took wins in the Supersport and Grand Prix Lightweight sprints, but Kyle Knutson took the Superbike win after a three way battle with Schmidt and Jon Champ. William Miller swept the Novice Ninja 250 sprints, with Pierre Champon and Adam Knauer close behind.

The club’s penultimate event of the 2015 season will be held over August 28-30 on the Brainerd International Raceway’s competition course, when the club will run a dual sprint format and hose their final New Riders School for 2015.
