SOLIS SNAGS #1 PLATE AS CVMA WINTER SERIES WINDS DOWN

Benny Solis wins CVMA’s Shootout race, securing the class championship and the club’s coveted number-1 plate.

Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association held Round 6 of its 7-round Winter Series this past weekend in Desert Center, CA, and as the club’s season winds down some riders have already synched class championships while others are battling for every point they can get.

Sunday’s big race, the 10-lap Shootout presented by Trackdaz and SoCal Trackdays, found Benny Solis, Michael Gilbert, and Jason Aguilar fighting fiercely under the desert sun. Solis led every lap on his Honda CBR1000RR, but Gilbert and Aquilar were never far behind and Gilbert rode by the checkered flag on his Yamaha YZF-R6 just 0.4 seconds off Solis’ tail. With the win, Solis cemented the class championship, which also brings with it CVMA’s number-1 plate. Aguilar, who briefly held second place on his 2017 Yamaha YZF-R6, may have come in third at the end but logged the fastest lap of the race and set a new class lap record of 1:47.494.

Another racer that didn’t win but set a new time to beat was Wyeth Jackson, who turned a 1:52.854 lap en route to a second-place finish in Sunday’s Formula 40 Middleweight race on her Kawasaki ZX-6R. Ryan Harper, who took second to Jackson in Sundays’ race, won on Sunday aboard his Yamaha YZF-R6. Dan McCormack landed in third place both days on his Yamaha YZF-R6.

Michael Gilbert also won the Attack Performance Formula Middleweight and the Racers Edge Performance Supersport Middleweight races both days of the weekend aboard his Yamaha YZF-R6.

Gray Pham dominated all year on his KTM RC390 and has the 350 Supersport and Ultralightweight Shootout classes in the bag. For many of the other classes—particularly the amateur classes, which have seen some close, clean racing this winter—it will come down to the final round, set to kick off on May 6-7.

CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying for grid position in all classes, amateur and expert, as well as a wide variety of classes to choose from.

Additionally, CVMA offers free reciprocity as a means of encouraging racers from other clubs to come out and compete. Log on to www.cvmaracing.com for more information.

More, from a press release issued by Aguilar Racing:

New Team Owner, Jason Aguilar wanted to bring his new bike to Chuckwalla to work on suspension setup and to get some break-in time on the new motor. Parts were continuing to arrive during the week as the team worked tirelessly to get the bike prepped in time for the weekend. Aguilar Racing mechanics, Chris Waters and Blair Ramey, pulled an all-nighter prepping the Aguilar Racing 2017 Yamaha YZF-R6 while Jason paused to get a couple hours of sleep before driving to Chuckwalla for practice Friday afternoon. The bike had zero miles on it when Jason arrived at the track late Friday afternoon just in time to get a handful of laps before practice ended.

The plan was to work on suspension setup, and to get some break-in time on the stock motor before it gets sent out for a proper race build before the start of the MotoAmerica Supersport 600 season opener at Road Atlanta. With a brand new R6 and no data, there was still much work to be done. Saturday was a struggle with issues getting the suspension to cooperate. Jason entered the Formula Middleweight and Middleweight Supersport races Saturday to get some extra testing time. Jason finished 2nd in Saturday’s Formula Middleweight and 3rd in Middleweight Supersport but his times were over 2 seconds off his normal race pace at Chuckwalla.

“I knew that going with the new R6 was going to be a challenge, as we have no data going into the season, but with the help of some great sponsors like Yamaha, Graves Motorsports, and FTECU, we hoped we could get the new bike to a competitive state by the start of the MotoAmerica season. It has been crazy busy though with my regular full time job, managing the team, still trying to finish up sponsor deals to be able to get funding for the whole season, getting all the parts in time, and putting the bike together, I have not had much time for rest”, explained Jason Aguilar.

The team worked on suspension setup Saturday night and by the 2nd practice Sunday morning, Jason had dropped his lap times by a full second. The team was still getting the suspension sorted, and in the first race, Supersport Middleweight, Jason improved by another second with a lap time of 1:48.454. There was still room for improvement as the team was coming to grips with the potential of the new 2017 Yamaha R6. A few tweaks to the suspension were made and Jason entered The Shootout: a 10 lap race that is open to both 600cc and unlimited displacement motorcycles.

Starting from 6th on the grid, Jason got bumped around in the first corner while the first two riders broke away from the pack. By the time Jason moved into 3rd place, the first two riders had pulled a several second gap. Jason went to work and set a new lap record for The Shootout of 1:47.493 in the clockwise direction while catching the two frontrunners. Some great racing occurred for the rest of the race with the 3 top riders stuck together for the remainder of the 10 lap race.
