Updated Superbike Results of ASBK Round 4

July 12 2017

Motorcycling Australia wishes to advise the amendment made to results of Race One of the Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance (YMI) Superbike class, at Hidden Valley Raceway on Sunday July 09 2017 during Round 4 of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK).

Superbike competitor Daniel Falzon (#25) was excluded from the results of Race One by the Clerk of Course, after an alleged breach of regulations relating to contributing or causing an incident resulting in a race stoppage. The incident occurred on lap seven of Race One at turn five, when Daniel Falzon (#25) and Kyle Buckley (#83) contacted.

Competitor Daniel Falzon (#25), submitted a protest in relation to the allegation and the matter was heard before a Jury. The members of the protest hearing (Jury) subsequently agreed with the Clerk of Course, that Daniel Falzon (#25) was involved in the crash with Kyle Buckely (#83) that ultimately stopped the race, requiring a restart.

From review of the evidence submitted at the protest hearing, the Jury could not agree that Daniel Falzon (#25) was the sole contributor nor cause of the race being stopped.

Based on the lack of irrefutable evidence in the first instance, the Jury supports the Clerk of Course’s decision to include Daniel Falzon (#25) in the restart of the race. In the second instance, with regard to the determination, the Jury does not support the Clerk of Course’s decision to exclude Daniel Falzon (#25) from the race results.

After review of all the evidence provided, including on board camera footage, data analysis, still photography and based on Daniel Falzon (#25) being permitted to participate in the restart of the race, and the inability of the Jury to conclusively prove that Daniel Falzon (#25) was the sole cause of the race stoppage (being the only rider penalised), the Jury accept Daniel Fazlon’s (#25) protest, and have overturned the results exclusion determination made by the Clerk of Course in favour of the protestor Daniel Falzon (#25).

By order of the Steward, the results for Superbike Race 1 of Round 4 at Hidden Valley Raceway have been amended to reinstate Competitor #25 (Daniel Falzon) into sixth position of that race.

Amended results can be found via Computime.com.au in due course.

DUNLOP-EQUIPPED RACERS RISE TO THE OCCASION IN CHALLENGING DARWIN ASBK CONDITIONS

Darwin’s fourth round of the 2017 Australian Superbike Championship saw Kawasaki BCperformance’s Robbie Bugden move within striking distance of the premier class series lead.

After qualifying in sixth position aboard his Dunlop-equipped ZX-10R, Bugden raced to a pair of fifth-place finishes in Sunday’s warm and challenging conditions to finish sixth overall.

Finishing ahead of multiple series rivals at Hidden Valley Raceway, the Queenslander now moves up to second in points, just 13 markers behind new series leader and defending champion Troy Herfoss.

Yamaha-mounted Cru Halliday wrapped up his Top End affair just two spots behind Bugden in the Superbike rankings. Using a 9-7 race score, the New South Wales racer finished seventh for the day in hot and challenging conditions.

In the Supersport category it was Triumph rider Mark Chiodo who claimed pole position with a new circuit best lap-time of 1m08.715s before running into issues in both races of the day.

Yamaha-mounted Supersport racer Sam Lambert finished just off the overall podium in fourth. After qualifying in fourth on Saturday, it was a strong and consistent round for the returning racer.

In the Moto3/125GP field Dunlop-backed racers also occupied first and third on the overall podium following three 10-lap races.

Topping the class was local youngster and Dunlop-equipped racer Joel Kelso followed by South Australia’s Dallas Skeer who rounded out the podium in third.

“It was a positive weekend for us in Darwin and we’re really excited to see Robbie move up the Superbike rankings in second position,” commented Dunlop national motorcycle manager Sebastian Mincone. “With Sam finishing just off the podium in Supersport and both Joel and Dallas on the podium in the Moto3/125GP category, we’re looking forward to a continued strong season as the focus turns to round five.”

HIDDEN VALLEY ASBK PODIUM WHITEWASH FOR PIRELLI

Clean-sweeps of the Superbike and Supersport class podiums in the Hidden Valley Raceway round of the 2017 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) presented by Motul Pirelli has Pirelli setting the standard, with that success also flowing across to the Supersport 300 ranks in the Northern Territory.

Darwin, 12 July 2017 – Pirelli-equipped teams have dominated Hidden Valley Raceway’s fourth round of the 2017 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) presented by Motul Pirelli, proving the product to beat in blistering Northern Territory conditions.

In the premier Superbike division it was Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Josh Waters who delivered a 1-1 result in Sunday’s action-packed races, on debut with the top specification GSX-R1000R. It was a special result for Waters, who has proven so successful in the Top End over the years.

Waters won the round from new championship leader Troy Herfoss and teammate Bryan Staring, as the Crankt Protein Honda Racing duo both debuted the highly-anticipated CBR1000RR SP2 in Darwin. Herfoss went 2-2 for the runner-up, while Staring lodged an impressive 4-3 scorecard in his first podium of the season upon return to the ASBK.

Pirelli riders filled seven out of the top 10 placings in the Superbike class, including privateer standout Corey Turner’s exceptional ride to a career-best fourth overall. In addition, the pole position was set by Daniel Falzon (JD Racing Yamaha) and Waters set a record-breaking 1m05.986s on lap three of race two.

The majority of Pirelli Superbike racers used the Diablo Superbike 120/70R17 SC2 front tyre with its added stability under heavy braking into turn one, with the SC1 also proving a popular option across the race weekend. At the rear the favoured selection was the Diablo Superbike 200/60R17 SC0.

In Supersport it was series leader Ted Collins (Next Gen Motorsports Suzuki) who won his second round in a row by virtue of a 2-1 scorecard, trading wins with Tom Toparis (Cube Racing Kawasaki). Joining them on the overall podium was local Mick Heffernan on-board his Kawasaki.

The Diablo Supercorsa 120/70ZR17 SC2 front and Diablo Supercorsa 180/60VR17 SC0 rear were primarily used, with Collins also lowering the lap record with a 1m09.153s lap-time on the fifth lap of the opening encounter on Sunday.

There was yet more success for the brand in Supersport 300 using the Diablo Supercorsa 110/70ZR17 SC1 front and 140/70ZR17 SC2 rear options, with Cube Racing’s Oli Bayliss (Kawasaki) racing to pole position, both race wins for the overall and a new lap record of 1m18.802s in the Up To 300s from Reid Battye (Kawasaki) and Yanni Shaw (Kawasaki).

The Over 300s saw Yamaha riders Tom Edwards, Tom Bramich and Jack Mahaffy fill the podium. As well as his second overall, Bramich had further reason to celebrate when he was awarded Pirelli’s ‘Rider of the Round Award’ through Motorcycling Australia (MA).

“Pirelli made the long trip to Darwin supplying service and product for competitors contesting round four of ASBK championship,” explained Pirelli product manager Garry Crilly. “We could not be happier with the performance of the Pirelli Diablo Superbike and Diablo Supercorsa SC tyre results. To fill all podium places in Superbike, Supersport and Supersport 300 and new lap records in all three classes is testament to Pirelli’s ability to perform in all conditions.”

Round five of the 2017 Australian Superbike Championship will be contested at Morgan Park Raceway in Queensland on 25-27 August. Pirelli Motorcycle Tyres are imported and distributed exclusively in Australia by Link International. Visit www.linkint.com.au for additional information.

WALTERS RACES TO SEASON-BEST FINISH AT HIDDEN VALLEY RACEWAY

Swann Insurance-supported Kawasaki racer Matt Walters rode his way to a season-best sixth-place finish at Darwin’s fourth round of the 2017 Australian Superbike Championship at Hidden Valley Raceway.

Aboard his ZX-10R machine, Walters admitted his qualifying struggles as he logged 12th-place on Saturday in the Superbike class with a time of 1m07.501s, however his consistent pace was an early strength.

Turning things around for Sunday’s race day, it was two consistent eighth-place finishes that saw him secure his best overall ranking of the year in the blistering Northern Territory conditions.

“We struggled a fair bit with qualifying and we couldn’t get the outright one-lap pace,” Walters said. “But the boys got it together and we were more consistent through the races which helped us.

“We ended up with two eighths, which put us in sixth overall and that’s the best result I’ve had this year. Now we can only build on that and keep pushing forward.

“I’d like to thank Brad Swallow and Glenn Willing as last week we had a fair bit of stuff going on and I rang them with probably two or three days left before we had to leave and they dropped everything.

“They came and gave us a hand and we’ve had a good weekend, so without those two people I wouldn’t have been able to make it here or do this.”

Looking to carry the momentum into Morgan Park’s fifth round of the series, Walters will now focus on fine-tuning his preparations to suit the 25-27 August event in Queensland.

“I haven’t been to Morgan Park so I’ll have to do some laps I reckon, but we’ll endeavour to try and practice on some smaller tracks and go to Morgan Park and see how we go,” he explained. “We’ll keep pushing on and we’ll just see where we end up.”

Walters now moves up the Superbike rankings to 11th in the championship, just three points outside of the top 10 in what is a talent-packed field for 2017.

Round five of the 2017 Australian Superbike Championship will take place at Morgan Park in Queensland on 25-27 August. Like Matt Walters Racing on Facebook and visit www.asbk.com.au for further information on the series.
