The 2006 Aprilia Tuono 1000R will be powered by the same 998cc (97.0 x 67.5mm, bore x stroke; 11.8:1, compression ratio) V-Twin “V60 Magnesium” engine as its fully-faired Superbike brother, the RSV1000. The new Tuono will draw air in at its nose, via a “dynamic air intake” under the headlight cluster, send it through a passage in the steering head and to 57mm throttle bodies, which will be controlled by a closed-loop fuel-injection system. The Tuono 1000R’s revised fuel-injection mapping and valve timing are said to create better low- and mid-range power with peak numbers of 133 crankshaft horsepower at 9500 rpm and 73.6 lbs.-ft. of torque at 8750 rpm, down slightly to the RSV1000’s peak numbers, while meeting EURO3 emission standards. The Tuono 1000R will share the RSV1000’s six-speed transmission, gearing ratios, twin-spar aluminum alloy frame, aluminum alloy banana-shaped swingarm, 55.5-inch wheelbase and 408-pound dry weight. The Tuono will also come with: 3.5 x 17.0-inch, front, and 6.0 x 17.0-inch, rear, aluminum alloy wheels; four-piston, four-pad, radial-mounted Brembo brake calipers clamping dual 320mm front rotors; steel-braided brake lines; 43mm inverted Showa forks; a Sachs shock; a steering damper; an improved seating position; and alternate, dealer-accessible mapping built into the stock ECU to accommodate racing exhaust systems.
