After missing the majority of three seasons due to a badly broken leg he suffered in early 2010, veteran rider Aaron Yates is planning to make his return to AMA Pro Superbike racing at the Triumph Big Kahuna Miami, September 21-23 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. And Yates is planning to begin his comeback on Evan Steel Performance’s privateer BMW S1000RR Superbike. “I went down there and rode the bike for a couple of days,” Yates told Roadracingworld.com, referring to a one-day test August 29 at Inde Motorsports Ranch, in Wilcox, Arizona, and a two-day test August 30-31 at Arroyo Seca Raceway, in Deming, New Mexico. Evan Steel Performance is located in Tucson, Arizona. “I really liked the bike,” Yates continued. “I liked the feel it had and the way it turned. It had a really good feel on the front end, and it seemed like it had really good grip. And even though we were at like 4500 feet of elevation is seemed like it had really good power. I really enjoyed riding it. “I got to thinking about coming to New Jersey [Motorsports Park] and racing the thing, but I guess Evan had some issues and couldn’t make it happen.” Yates, a two-time former AMA Pro Superstock Champion and two-time AMA Pro Supersport Champion, also had an issue — he no longer holds a valid AMA Pro Superbike license. “I was ready to go racing,” said Yates, “but with the holiday [Labor Day] and everyone traveling there really wasn’t enough time to make it happen. So I guess now we have a couple of more weeks to train and get ready to go to Homestead.”
