AMA SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP ADDS MID-OHIO SPORTS CAR COURSE FINALE, CONFIRMS SCHEDULE CHANGES PICKERINGTON, Ohio (Nov. 17, 2005) AMA Pro Racing announced today that it will add a new weekend of the AMA Superbike Championship presented by Parts Unlimited to its 2006 schedule and confirmed the move of two of its previously scheduled mid-season dates. The new event will be a unique season-ending shootout at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. The date changes involve moving the Infineon Raceway, Sonoma, Calif., event from its originally-scheduled date of May 5-7 to May 19-21 and the move of the Virginia International Raceway, Alton, Va., round up one week to Aug. 18-20. The total number of AMA Superbike races in the 11-event championship remains at 19, the highest ever. As part of a five-year agreement with Mid-Ohio, the AMA Superbike Shootout, as the season-ending event will be known, is scheduled for Sept. 29 Oct. 1, and will feature a unique format and points arrangement. While details have yet to be finalized, plans call for entries to be limited and a special points structure to be utilized. In addition to determining the AMA Superbike Champion, the Mid-Ohio finale will crown champions in each of the series’ support classes including AMA Supersport, Superstock and Formula Xtreme. “We are happy to bring an additional round of the AMA Superbike Championship to Mid-Ohio, said Scott Hollingsworth, AMA Pro Racing’s CEO. “Mid-Ohio is clearly a fan favorite and it makes sense to build on the success the track has established in its 23 years of hosting AMA Superbike events.” Mid-Ohio will continue to host an August Superbike doubleheader, the Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire, in addition to the fall finale. The midsummer race was moved from its traditional date for 2006, but is set to return to July in 2007. “We didn’t want to simply add another AMA Superbike date to our calendar,” said Mid-Ohio President Michelle Trueman Gajoch. “We wanted to be part of something very special in the motorcycling community and with the urgency of the season finale and the unique format that is planned, we think we’ve accomplished that. We expect it to be one of the premier events in all of motorcycle racing.” Trueman Gajoch added that Mid-Ohio will continue with its comprehensive track improvement plans and that additional details are forthcoming. AMA Superbike Championship races at Mid-Ohio have traditionally been some of the best-attended on the AMA Pro Racing calendar. The track began hosting AMA nationals in 1983. AMA Pro Racing also announced that the Pikes Peak Raceway event in Fountain, Colo., has been officially removed from the schedule due to the sale and slated closure of the facility. As previously announced, AMA Pro Racing officials continue to discuss the disposition of that event with the new owners since the parties have a binding contract for 2006. Infineon Raceway requested that its event date be moved to the now open Pikes Peak date. The change improves the overall schedule by breaking up a stretch of three consecutive weekend events at the end of April and beginning of May. The schedule also creates a unique opportunity for racing fans to catch both an AMA Superbike event and AMA Motocross event over the course of a couple days. The Hangtown Classic, the first race of the 2006 AMA Motocross Championship presented by FMF will kick off on the same weekend In Sacramento, a relatively short drive from Sonoma. Hollingsworth pointed out that it would be possible to catch the Superbike action at Infineon Raceway on Saturday and then take in the Motocross action on Sunday. 2006 AMA SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP PRESENTED BY PARTS UNLIMITED SCHEDULE March 8-11 Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach, FL April 21-23 Barber Motorsports Park, Birmingham, AL (Superbike Doubleheader) April 28-30 California Speedway, Fontana, CA (Superbike Doubleheader) May 19-21 Infineon Raceway, Sonoma, CA (Superbike Doubleheader) June 2-4 Road America, Elkhart Lake, WI (Superbike Doubleheader) June 16-18 Miller Motorsports Park, Tooele, UT (Superbike Doubleheader) July 21-23 Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Monterey, CA ** August 4-6 Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Lexington, OH (Superbike Doubleheader) Aug. 18-20 Virginia International Raceway, Alton, VA (Superbike Doubleheader) Sept. 1-3 Road Atlanta, Braselton, GA (Superbike Doubleheader) Sept. 30-Oct. 1 Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Lexington, OH **AMA & Moto GP combined weekend Dates and Locations Subject to Change About AMA Pro Racing AMA Pro Racing is the leading sanctioning body for motorcycle sport in the United States.
