Gillim scores; Motorcycle-Superstore.com’s McDonough has season-best finish

LEXINGTON, Ohio (July 14) – After finishing second in Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport on Saturday, Hayden Gillim was not going to be denied on Sunday during the Buckeye SuperBike Weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

“I wanted to be aggressive from the very start of the race,” Gillim said. “Yesterday I got a good start, got in line, and just sat there. I didn’t really try to make passes until the end of the race. Today I was dicing it up from the very first lap.

“We didn’t make any changes to the bike; I just needed to work on some lines around the track,” Gillim said. “I was really getting killed out of the Keyhole (turn). I still wasn’t on par with everyone else but I was better.”

Gillim held off a hard-charging Travis Wyman in the closing laps of the race, which is part of the GEICO AMA Pro Road Racing Series, but Gillim said had Wyman not been there, he probably would have still been riding aggressively on his Team 95/RM Racing Yamaha all the way to the checkers. “I kind of wore myself out pushing so hard early in the race,” Gillim said. “I had to get behind Travis for a while until I got my strength back. After that we really started going at it. I didn’t even know he had a penalty. I was still racing for the win.”

Wyman was initially penalized 20 seconds when it was ruled that he had passed in a yellow flag zone. Following a review of the pass by AMA officials, Wyman was deemed to make a clean pass on his Harv’s Harley-Davidson Suzuki and awarded his spot on the podium an hour after the completion of the race. Miles Thornton finished third.

Motorcycle-Superstore.com-backed rider Devon McDonough finished a season-best eighth on Sunday. “It means a lot to me and my team to get our first podium of the year,” Wyman said. “Second is really good for us.”

McDonough went into the weekend trying to rebound from a difficult race at Barber Motorsports Park. He said with every completed lap during the weekend at Mid-Ohio, his confidence and aggressiveness grew. “A lot of the secret to success at this track is track knowledge,” McDonough said. “I was going out, riding and learning something every single lap. Every single session my fastest lap was my last lap. It felt good to come out at the end of the event with an eighth-place finish.

“Going fast in morning practice today really helped me a lot. I was more aggressive during warm-ups and it set the pace.”

Thornton also had an aggressive mindset going into the race, but he said in hindsight that he might have been a little too much so. “I pushed really hard at the beginning today. I wanted to be real aggressive,” Thornton said. “We were all running about the same pace, so three or four laps in I started burning up my tires. “The last four or five laps, I really wanted to keep it on two wheels. I didn’t drop off that bad, but I could have had a little more if I would have saved some tire for the end.”

Up next for the Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport series is the July 19-21 Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif.
