GEICO Motorcycle pro Westby finishes where he started in Laguna Seca

MONTEREY, Calif. (July 21) – In a Daytona SportBike race shortened six laps following a red-flag stoppage, GEICO Motorcycle Honda rider Dane Westby finished a respectable but frustrating seventh in Sunday’s Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Westby, of Tulsa, Okla., was the No. 7 qualifier for the event, Round 5 of the GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing Series, and entered the weekend seventh in the points. His qualifying effort, result, and championship ranking show consistency, but after finishing runner-up in the popular 600cc class in 2012, Westby was understandably frustrated. “There’s a lot of sevens on the ledger for us this year and it’s getting frustrating,” Westby said. “We knew there would be a bit of a mountain to climb this year switching to the Honda, but the mountain might be a little steeper than we anticipated. “After finishing runner-up to the championship last year and regularly getting up on the podium, I know we have the ability to be there again. We all want it and the work is definitely being put in; we’re just frustrated the top results aren’t happening just yet.” The team knows the entire 2013 campaign could have been different if Westby hadn’t injured his spleen during practice for the season-opening Daytona 200 at Daytona International Speedway. Doctors forbid him from riding in the race, so he earned zero points. “On that superspeedway our performance would have been different,” Westby said. “We would have been on the podium for sure and maybe even won the race. That would have started everything off so well for us, but it just wasn’t something we were able to experience. “Ever since then we seem to be seventh or so every race. We’re not even getting a whiff of a podium finish. It’s been tough but we’re not giving up at all. In fact, we’re going to work even harder. As a rider, I know I need to be perfect. I probably need to lose another pound or two; maybe that would help. “I know all the guys on this team are the best in the business. That’s why they’ve won so many championships over the years. We’ll just keep our heads down until things turn for us. We are so close to being there, but you don’t have to be off by much to look out of sync in this class because the competition is so good at the top.” The series now shifts to Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, for the next race, which will take place Aug. 2-4 and feature two main events on the 15-turn, three-mile race course on the outskirts of Salt Lake City.

Yamaha Extended Service/Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha Delivers A One-Two Punch As Beaubier Wins & Gerloff Is Second At Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Monterey, CA – July 21, 2013 – The Y.E.S./Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha team couldn’t have asked for a better weekend on the worldwide stage at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Cameron Beaubier continued his string of perfect race weekends aboard his #6 YZF-R6 as he earned the pole yesterday in AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike, and then the northern Californian won Sunday’s race in convincing fashion with a gap of nearly three full seconds over the rest of the field. He also earned the bonus point for leading the most laps in the red-flag-shortened race and now has a 56-point lead in the 2013 Championship. After the initial start, Cameron slotted himself into the lead pack to survey the field–which is the rider’s trademark strategy–he got into the lead and started working on pulling a gap. Unfortunately, the race was red-flagged and had to be restarted for a 5-lap sprint to the finish. At that point, Cameron abandoned his strategy and got the holeshot on the restart where he immediately began to pull away from the pack. “I pulled a pretty good gap, and then we had a red flag,” Cameron said. “So, on the restart, I knew that I needed to get to the front a lot more quickly. I got the holeshot, and just put my head down till I saw the checkers. Five laps go by quickly here at Laguna, and I was happy that I won.” In hot pursuit of Cameron during the race was his teammate and rider of the #8 Y.E.S./Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha Garrett Gerloff. Garrett, who hails from Spring, Texas, finished second to Cameron, and ran an excellent race of his own. This was Garrett’s first-ever race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and he scored his second top-two finish of the season, which includes his second-place finish in March at the Daytona 200. Garrett said, ”I’m finally back on the podium! We came into this weekend, and everything was going smoothly. I kept improving my laptimes more and more as the weekend went on, and I’m really happy to get my second podium this year.” Garrett is currently in 4th place in the 2013 Championship points standings. The Y.E.S./Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha team will be back in action in less than two weeks for Round 6 of the AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Championship, which takes place on August 2 – 4 at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT.
