Roadracing stopped being "something I do" a long time ago. It's become a way of life for me and my family, even in seasons that I couldn't compete for one reason or another.
2014 marks my 12th season being associated with motorcycle roadracing. I come from a background of racing bicycles (road and mountain) and skis. In 2002 I did my first track day and it wasn't 10 minutes after I got home from that experience on my street bike that I was shopping for a dedicated race machine. The bug caught on "full tilt" in 2005, when I finished grad school and I guess that's when it stopped being 'something I do'.
I've had great mentors over the years, people who have shown me the way to (and sometimes how NOT to) last a long time in this sport. Jim Brewer, Mark Schellinger, Shane Turpin and many MANY others have helped to shape my racing career.
Along the way I've done what I can to make our sport and community better as well. Following a couple of devastating accidents at tracks here in Colorado I started Chicane Trackdays. At that time Colorado had no official track day provider, the tracks were simply open for test and tune. I believed that riders here wanted a better, safer experience, so I provided it. We ran days that were fully staffed with safety crew, control riders and instructors and set a standard of care that changed how the tracks were operating in our state. It's been shared with me that my dedication to track day safety influenced the model for open riding that is employed by our newest track, High Plains Raceway. It's a place that I ride today without reservation, knowing that they have an outstanding, well trained staff on hand in case something goes wrong.
In 2009 my family grew with the birth of twin boys. When I say that racing is a family lifestyle, I mean it. The boys have an autographed poster from Jakub Smrz in their bedroom and they know most of the Moto GP racers by name and number. They harass my competitors and they simply cannot wait to go to the racetrack. Sarah, my wife, is equally supportive and it looks like 2014 is going to shape up to be an awesome season.
I'm always working on being "good" before I work on going "fast"
